"Lords of Dogtown" Weltpremiere LA

"Behind the Premiere of Lords of Dogtown"

by "german skateboarding" 2005

So, wieder daheim in Berlin.

----------------------------------------------------------------

So now I´m back in Berlin. Fucked up by the grey, rainy, shitty weather and the usual jet-lag, that hits me harder than ever. Looking back on what happened just a week ago.

It was a tuesday. Sunny California! The motherland of Skateboarding. Me and Daniel are sitting on a small stripe of well shaped grass, in the cool shadow of a huge building. We are looking over the street. Not a common street. It is the Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood! You may know it from the large white letters on a hill.

And for sure you know that Blvd. It is covered with thousands of shiny golden stars. Stars for the stars. The movie stars. And it is not just any Place on this Blvd. We are resting next to the world famous "Mann’s Chinese Theater". In 1977 the premiere of the first "Star Wars" movie took place here. Well, 1977 I was 4 years old and Daniel was just born. That’s funny because right know the last episode is on screen. But tonight nobody cares about a space fairy tale. Tonight is another premiere night. And this time it’s about a real story which only life can write. Tonight we gonna see the world premiere of the "Lords of Dogtown" feature!

----------------------------------------------------------------

It is about the lifes of the well known Z-Boys. Maybe you have seen the documentary which was released in 2001. Well, at least a famous director and producer saw it. David Fincher (Seven and Fight Club) was stoked and announced to do a feature film. He got one of the original Z-Boys to write the screenplay. But maybe you have not seen the documentary? So let my give you a brief review about the story.
In the 1970s, a group of teenage surfers from a tough neighborhood known as “Dogtown” in Venice, California, pioneered a revolutionary new style of skateboarding. Riding the waves at the Pacific Ocean Park pier, the Z-Boys, known for their aggressive style and hard street attitude, combined the death-defying moves of surfing with the art of skateboarding and became overnight sensations and local legends. With empty pools as their canvas, the Z-Boys paved the way to what is now referred to as “extreme sports” and created a lifestyle that spread infectiously to become a worldwide counterculture phenomenon. But all of this fame would take its toll on the friendships that they thought would last a lifetime as the sport that started out as an afternoon hobby turned into big business.

----------------------------------------------------------------

So now back to the present at the blvd. An army of photographers and media people is filling up the spot behind a barrier, which is separating the fans from the stars. Everybody is trying to get the best spot for pictures and interviews.

----------------------------------------------------------------

The scene is covered with the 70’s soundtrack from the movie. Large speakers are playing "Fire" from Jimi Hendrix. That sounds good. It spreads a feeling of the time. In the background stands a huge skateboard halfpipe where a lot of skate action is heating up the spot.

Now we think it is time for us to join the scene. We use the business card of our contact from Sony germany to pass the security guys. More easy then we thought. The only thing we know is that we will get our tickets at the "Will call" (whatever that means) desk.

----------------------------------------------------------------

After the first usual confusion, all is set up. The guys from germany are "covering the event"! (whatever that means). We got our space on the carpet between well known magazines and newspapers, and some guys from New Zealand television, who seemingly had no idea of who was Tony Alva or Stacy Peralta and were just watching out for Hollywood celebrities (funny guys though).

----------------------------------------------------------------

The first one we were able to see is a legend. Tony Magnusson, the founder of the skate company h-street!

----------------------------------------------------------------

Followed by the living Dogtown legend Jay Adams! It is him, his son and his very young looking girlfriend. He reaches us the hand and is open for questions. He looks even more tough than we thought. On his neck he has a tatoo" 100% Skateboarder" We are really surprised to meet him here, because we heard that he might not be allowed to come due to his parole regulations.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Right after Jay, the next legend walks by. Skip Engblom. He was one of the owners of the Zephyr Productions Surf Shop. He founded the Zephyr skate-team and supplied the kids with boards, urethane wheels and gave them their first Team-shirts.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Right behind him the writer of the screenplay. A dressed-in-black Stacy Peralta. After his time in Dogtown he joined George Powell to found Powell-Peralta and is now working in the film biz. He really enjoys the red carpet. He tells us that he had to change the name of his character to be able to write about his life and this night was the final of a five year working period.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Then we shake hands with Tony "Mad Dog" Alva. He looks like a rock star and seems to enjoy the red carpet even more then Stacy. Some fans are shouting “Tony Tony Tony”. But may they mean “the Hawk”? We don’t care and say hello to both Tonys.

----------------------------------------------------------------

We also talked to the actors who played the legends, and they were really polite. They had a skateboard training for the movie for over there months. Well but, we are not there for the Hollywood guys. But for the record; Starring Emile Hirsch as Jay Adams, Victor Rasuk as Tony Alva, Heath Ledger as Skip Engblom and John Robinson as Stacy Peralta.

----------------------------------------------------------------

It is quickly getting dark in California, and we are advised to hurry to go inside the theatre, because the movie is going to start. Right before we want start to walk on the soft red carpet, Lance Mountain appears on the scene. He did the skateboard shooting for the movie. Also a nice and funny guy!

----------------------------------------------------------------

Inside the Chinese Theater. It is a huge, old, and very spectacular building. We just grab a traditional Coke and salted Popcorn pack and search for our seats.

And there were at least 600 of them! And the hall is completely crowded. Now everybody is excited to see the movie. The lights go off and a spot goes on. The director Catherine Hardwicke thanks all the people who made the movie come to screen and wishes everybody to enjoy it.

The curtain swings aside and the crowd is yelling and clapping! Lords of Dogtown - the world premiere.

Now I think you would like to know the story. In all its tiny tiny details ?...
Well the story is based on real events. So that is no secret. It looks and feels like a 70´s modern classic. And that feels good. You see young guys sneaking out of their parents houses at night to go for a morning surf . And they skate to the peer.

----------------------------------------------------------------

After five minutes I think, wow that’s not too bad. Especially compared to what I have seen in other hollywood skate (story?) films before. And it is getting better and better. New Urethan Wheels and great skating and really good actors. They look and feel like the original Z-Boys. Sneaking into backyard pools and finding a direction for their future. They spread into different directions but finally come together again for a dying friend and skate the “Dogbowl” for him. At the end people clap and cheer loud for Tony , Stacy and Jay. That emits a good mood. Finally they got honored for how skateboarding has influenced their life until today. (And those of millions of other skaters worldwide)

----------------------------------------------------------------

So we are getting up and look around. We see Christian Hosoi and Jason Lee leaving for the after-party. We have to go by car of course. LA is a big city.

We find a good parking spot close to the Avalon (where the party will take place). Everybody has to show his ID. Well, all drinks were for free! The party place is an old theater as well, which was redesigned for a hollywood club. As we enter we can hear Perry Farrell, former lead singer of Jane’s Addiction and Porno for Pyros, performing live on stage. Wow!

----------------------------------------------------------------

So we hit the bar and receive two Gin Tonics which were able to bring the dead back to life. We ordered the drinks next to Jackass Johnny Knoxville who also has a part in the film.
Then we grab some snacks from one of the tables that is stuffed with all different kinds of delicious food and desserts. The place is decorated with old skateboards and even the small sweet cake which are served by beautiful young women is decorated with little plastic toy skateboards. We hit the second party floor and sit down to enjoy (the scene and the food) and to make sure that this is all happening for real. Right after a few sips of Gin Tonic a deep and very familiar bass guitar sound is reaching our ears and we think: “this can`t be..” But it IS: the Suicidal Tendencies!! After a minute for the sound check Mike Muirs voice could be heard over the speakers. 13 Years ago I saw them the last time live on stage and now here at the party. First it seems to be to hard for the audience.

But after the seperation from Celebrities and Skater the dancing and jumping starts. And we joined them for sure!
Our stage is yours stage, Mike Muir, shouts in the microphone. The security guys are getting really pissed, but who cares. They getting Jay Adams up the stage and the crowed is freaking out. On the side of the stage is the complete Muir family Mother Dad and brother Jim Muir. They are listening what Mike says to the hollywood celebrities. "Its you the beauty and the rich, who have the power and the money to change things. Get up every day and be yourself and try as hard as you can. Don't just follow rules. And if somebody say you can do that, then try even harder."

Well I think that was the first hollywood party where the guest had listen to such a speech. Suicidal, Suicidal, Suicidal..... They play “Possessed to skate” and all the other all-time favorites. An hour later the show is over and the people are looking either for more drinks or home to get some sleep before the next work-day. At this late hour we met Shepard Fairey (Gaint / Obey) He gives the movie a 10. After we say thank you to our very friendly and caring Sony-USA contact person Amy, we decided that our heads would explode if we got more input on this day. The party finally clears off anyway and we say goodbye to the Lords of Dogtown. On our way back to the hotel we say to each other: I don't wash my hand for weeks now! Today we have shaked the hands with our rolling heros, and we will never forget.
